Web design has become far more accessible to mass audiences in recent times, as you no longer need to have an in-depth knowledge of HTML and/or CSS in order to get a decent looking site up and running. CMS’s (content management systems) such as Wordpress and Drupal have made web design far easier, as users now only need to install their chosen CMS and pick from a variety of themes. Users then only need to write and publish content on their site (via the simple CMS) in order to get their site properly up and running.
However, how do you know which content management system is best for you? There are several different CMS’s available, although you’ll probably be better served by selecting one of the bigger, popular CMS’s. To give you a helping hand with choosing the best CMS for your needs, here’s a brief look at what’s available.
Wordpress is probably the most popular and widely used content management system, and would make a good choice for most purposes. As well as boasting a wide variety of themes for users to choose from, the open-source plugins available for the Wordpress CMS make it one of the most versatile and useful systems available. There are several SEO based plugins, allowing you to ensure you have a fully optimised website.
Magento is another excellent CMS, and is probably the better choice if you’re looking for a CMS that specialised in e-commerce. Magento isn’t quite as versatile as Wordpress and is perhaps more open to attack, but it’s still an extremely useful and powerful CMS.
Joomla and Drupal are both very strong candidates for your chosen CMS, although most users would argue that neither are as effective as the Wordpress system. However the functionality with both of these CMS’s is excellent, and both allow for professional looking blogs or e-commerce websites.
Probably the best way to decide is to try one or two of the systems for yourself (if not all of them), as the only way you’ll know if it’s right for you is to try it out. There are several other high profile CMS’s available, although the four mentioned above are easily the most popular and widely used.
